Our hot chocolate sensory bin is finally here! I have been planning this theme since before Christmas so I’m really excited to see it finally come to life. When I first envisioned this bin I knew I wanted to use our pinto beans that I’ve shared in previous bins, including our construction zone theme. The beans are such a versatile filler and I find them easy to clean up if we have a spill outside of the bin. To create this theme, I took reusable plastic cups with lids and wrapped them in ...

Arctic Ice Sensory Bin
With temperatures dropping into the teens here this weekend, it seemed like the perfect time for an Arctic ice themed sensory bin. I took advantage of the cold weather to make glacier cubes outside overnight. They are simple to make by adding water to small plastic storage containers and setting them outside (if it’s cold out) or in the freezer. We used containers we already had in the kitchen cabinet to make this an easy and affordable project. The next morning, we brought our newly ...
Rainbow Rice Recipe
Sensory bins are one of our favorite activities. When I created my first bin last year, I decided to use rice as our base. I was drawn to the fact that it was an affordable filler and liked that we would be able to dye the rice to add a pop of color. As I searched for instructions online, I found that many recipes called for rubbing alcohol or a large quantity of white distilled vinegar. I knew I didn’t want to use rubbing alcohol but was also hesitant to add white distilled vinegar due to ...
Rocket Ship Craft
Yesterday was our last day of outer space lessons. We’ve had a blast learning about our solar system with the help of National Geographic Kids and incorporating activities to bring what we’ve learned to life. Our final lesson focused on space travel and the moon landing so we decided to make our own space shuttle. This craft can be decorated in various ways so I’ve provided the instructions for our design, along with suggestions on alternative supplies, to help make this project easy to ...
Solar System Sensory Bin
We’ve been learning about outer space all week with activities that have been both fun and educational. As we continued discussing our solar system, it gave me an idea for our next sensory bin theme. With dry black beans as the base, we added in astronaut figurines, sensory balls, glow in the dark stars and scoops to create this fun sensory activity. This bin would also work great with alternative base fillers such as black pom-poms, deep purple/black rainbow rice or dyed pasta. This ...
Moon Dough Recipe
Continuing our outer space theme this week, we learned about the moon today. We are using resources from National Geographic Kids to guide our lessons. After learning some fun facts and discussing the phases, we decided to make moon dough to create our very own moon. Connor really enjoyed making and playing with the dough. He even added his own craters to the finished product. If you haven’t created moon dough before, it is an easy and affordable recipe with only two required ingredients: ...
